Arthur Dunn

Arthur Dunn played in two FA Cup finals and captained England twice in three appearances.

Dunn was a steadfast amateur at a time when the game was becoming more and more professional.

Playing for Old Etonians Dunn was in the side which beat Blackburn Rovers in 1882 and also played the following year when the ex-public schoolboys faced Blackburn Olympic in the final; a match that was to become a watershed in the history of the game.

Dunn was injured 10 minutes from time and was powerless to stop the working class professionals of Olympic from winning the cup.

With professionalism now unstoppable and with the FA Cup becoming their exclusive domain Dunn proposed a new competition to be played between the old boys of the public schools.

He died before his dream became reality but the Arthur Dunn Cup is still the most prestigious knockout competition in the amateur game.
