The
original have boots will travel footballer William Gowdy
enjoyed a remarkable career.

A
left half with a bag full of tricks William Gowdy played
only two seasons of NonLeague football.
But,
his fascinating career saw him gain 6 full Irish caps and
play everywhere from the English First Division to the
Yorkshire League; turning out for 15 different
clubs.
Beginning
his career in the Irish League with Ards he made four
inter-league appearances before signing for Hull
City.
In
his short spell at Hull he won his first full international
cap and helped them to reach the semi-final of the FA Cup
before he joined Sheffield Wednesday.
Spells
at Gateshead, Linfield and Hibs followed before he joined
Goole Town in 1936.
Technically
on loan from Hibs, Gowdy was captain at Goole and inspired
them to win the Yorkshire League title.
Cheshire
League side Altrincham then paid Hibs £500 for his transfer
though, true-to-form he only stayed at Moss lane for a
single season before joining Aldershot; his last club before
retiring though he did play wartime football as a guest for
Hull City, Halifax, Bradford PA and York
City.
