Nuneaton Borough 1966/67

The demise of Nuneaton Borough has being well chronicled with the new ‘Town’ club set to carry Boros flame.

But Nuneaton fans have plenty of good times to look back on not the least of which was the 1966/67 FA Cup run which saw Borough reach the Third Round for only the second time in their history.

That season would see Nuneaton finishing as runners-up in the Southern League’s Premier Division but it was in the cup that the club really made headlines.

Beginning the competition in the First Qualifying Round Nuneaton’s early progress was comfortable; a 6-1 win at Atherstone Town followed by an 8-2 thrashing of Loughborough earned Borough a trip to Burton Albion.

A single goal victory was followed by beating Macclesfield in a replay and Nuneaton Borough had made the First Round Proper for the first time in twelve years.

A 2-0 win at Amateur Cup holders Wealdstone earned Borough a home match against Ivor Allchurch’s Swansea Town.

The Swans had beaten another NonLeague club, Folkestone, in the First Round but they were no match for Borough who swept them aside 2-0 in front of an 18,000 crowd at Manor Park.

Second Division Rotherham were the visitors for the Third Round tie and over 22,000 squeezed into the Manor to see a thrilling match played out in awful conditions as heavy rain turned the pitch into a quagmire.

In an end-to-end match it was the home side that took the lead with Cutler slotting the ball home after Hails shot had been blocked.

Rotherham equalised immediately after half-time but were hanging on at the end after having their keeper carried off with 20 minutes still to play.  Despite incessant pressure Nuneaton couldn’t find a way past the stand-in keeper.

The replay at Millmoor was won by Rotherham by a single goal from Chappell though Nuneaton Borough had the better of the chances in front of another 22,000 plus crowd.
