(Lord) Arthur Kinnaird
Lord
Arthur Kinnaird
Born
1847
Died
1923
An
influential figure in the development of football Kinnaird
holds the record for the most appearances in FA Cup
finals.

He
played in nine finals in a variety of positions from
goalkeeper to striker and was on the winning side five
times; (1873, 1877 & 1878 with Wanderers and 1879 &
1882 with Old Etonians).
Kinnaird
also holds the unfortunate distinction of scoring the first
own goal in a cup final when, as a keeper, he inadvertently
carried the ball over his own line in the 1877 match against
Oxford University.
Kinnaird
was instrumental in arranging the first unofficial
internationals between England and Scotland and won his only
official Scottish cap in the 1873 defeat to
England.
Very
skilled in the (soon to be outlawed) art of ‘hacking’ he was
known as the toughest tackler in the game.
Kinnaird went on to be FA president for 33 years dying shortly
before the opening of Wembley Stadium.
