Bangor City FC
One
of the oldest and most illustrious clubs in Wales Bangor
City have a rich history of competing in the Welsh and
English Leagues along with some unlikely, but glorious,
European adventures.
Formed
as far back as 1893 as Bangor FC, the club became Bangor
City in 1923 shortly after graduating from local football to
the Welsh National League.
1927/28
saw City reach their first Welsh Cup Final before joining
the Birmingham Combination in 1932.
After
the Second World War, City joined the Lancashire Combination
and, subsequently, the Cheshire County
League. The
1950s and 60s brought the club success and heartbreak in
equal measure.
Welsh
Cup winners for the first time in 1962 City were beaten
finalists in 1961 and 64, semi-finalists on three other
occasions and twice runners-up in the league.
The
Welsh Cup triumph allowed Bangor to play in Europe for the
first time and they make a terrific impact by almost beating
Italian giants Napoli. The First Leg at Farrar
Road saw City achieve an unbelievable 2-0 victory before
losing the second leg 3-1.
The
away goals rule, which would have seen Bangor through to the
next round, wasn’t in operation at that time so a third game
was played, at Highbury, with the Italians fortunate to win
by the odd goal in three.
1968
saw Bangor City become one of the founding members of the
Northern Premier League with the step up to the Aliance
Premier league, again as a founding member, in
1979.
Relegation
quickly followed but City were soon back after winning the
NPL in 1982.
1985/86 saw Bangor enter the UEFA Cup and, after beating
Fredrikstad of Norway, were unlucky to lose 3-0 on aggregate
to the mighty Atletico Madrid.
The
early 1990s saw the club in their pioneer role once more as
they became founder members of the League of Wales prompting
a decade of success.
Successive
championships were won in 1994 and 1995 with the Welsh Cup
being won for the second and third times in 1998 and
2000.
Since
then success has been thin on the ground though the club
have managed three third places in the LoW and subsequently
the Welsh Premier League.
2006
saw Bangor again reach the final of the Welsh Cup only for
them to lose 2-0 to Rhyl.
Bangor
City will now be hoping to rekindle the glory days with a
fourth Welsh title being the first objective for the Farrar
Road club.
