Wimborne Town
Though
the club was originally formed way back in 1878 it was to
be nearly one hundred years before Wimborne Town took their
place in senior NonLeague football.
Founder
members of the Dorset County FA in 1887 the club would spend
many years playing local football with varying success with
the highpoint probably being the winning of
the Dorset
Senior Amateur Cup in 1937.
The
Wimborne Town story in senior NonLeague football really
began in 1981 when they were admitted to the First Division
of the Western League following development work at their
Cuthbury stadium. Town made an immediate
impact finishing fourth in their first
season.
The
following year saw the Magpies embark on what is still their
best ever run in the FA Cup when they reached the First
Round proper before losing to then Football League side
Aldershot 4-0.
Remarkably
this was the first season in which the club had entered the
competition and, beginning in the Preliminary Qualifying
Round, they won five ties before meeting
Aldershot.
1987/88
saw Wimborne Town switch from the Western League to the
Wessex where they have remained ever since though they have
been champions on three occasions and runners-up in three
other seasons.
Indeed, in over twenty years of competing in the Wessex
League they have finished outside the top eight on only one
occasion.
The
Magpies first Wessex championship came in 1991/92 in what
was to prove to be an extraordinary campaign for the
club.
The
season began on a low key note with the Magpie tumbling out
of the FA Cup at the first hurdle before they enjoyed a
wonderful run in the league and the FA Vase which cumulated
in winning the Wessex League title, the Dorset Senior Cup
and reaching Wembley to meet Guiseley in the final of the
Vase.
Wimborne
Town reached the final after playing a staggering eleven
ties, including two replays, though they showed no signs of
tiredness by winning a remarkable final 5-3 becoming the
only team to notch five goals in a Vase
final.
Further
Wessex League success followed with a league and cup double
in 1994 and in 1999/2000 Wimborne won their third
title.
Though
success on the pitch warranted further progress up the
Pyramid the clubs Cuthbury home failed to satisfy ground
grading requirements so the magpies continue to play Wessex
League football.
However,
recent improvements to Cuthbury means that the club have now
achieved the required grading at their ground and are now
eligible for promotion to the Southern
League.
